Who will benefit?

All staff, especially those involved in the role of the responsible person (RP), involved in the management and operation of building water systems and those who have a roll in the control procedures. This Legionella course has been developed to address the issues that surround Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease, the management and treatment of water systems, health and safety management, current UK legislation, good practice procedures and a review a selection of outbreaks and incidents. The course of 1 day completes with an exam, accredited marked and certificated by WHT Ltd.

The Aim

To provide delegates with a comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities for building water systems. To learn the following:

  • Hot and cold water systems and minimal knowledge on Legionella risks HSG 274 P2

  • Clinical Aspects

  • The Law

  • The requirements for health and safety management

  • The approved code of practice (L8) and procedures to control Legionella bacteria risks

  • Current UK legislation, your obligations and the importance of compliance

  • Recent incidents and outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease

  • About practical examples from an experienced Legionella specialist within the field of operations of control for over 33 years

The Objectives

Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:

Water testing theory

Medical and  legal aspects

Risk systems and design standards

Monitoring hot and cold water systems

Flushing methodology

Logbook keeping theory

TMV servicing and maintenance

Knowledge of low level disinfection systems

 

 Accreditation
The course is supported by a WHT assessment/exam that provides certification depending on four classification of pass marks. This will be noted as either attended course, passed, passed with merit or passed with distinction. The paper is recorded on a data base and is available as proof of training and content subject to any independent audit.

Course Content

  • Introduction

  • HSE video segments and other video content  are used throughout the course to enhance power point display in order to demonstrate legionella control procedures

  • Water and its use in hot and cold water systems

  • Managing Legionella hazards in hot and cold water systems

  • A review of the requirements for health and safety record keeping and site log books

  • A review of the Health and Safety Commissions Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L8 document “Legionnaires ‘Disease: Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems”2013. This guide has special legal status and gives practical advice on the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2010 (COSHH) and the relevant parts of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR) Health & Safety Guidance (HSG) 274 P2 2014 will be used for the basis of the control measures

  • Review of selected case studies involving Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease

  • Examination of competence covering course content. Upon successful completion of the assessment/examination, candidates will receive a CPD Certificate, graded against pass marks. 

The course will be supported with electronic notes covering all aspects of the course and can be used as open book for the purpose of the exams. These notes will provide future reference in the work place for all candidates. Note paper and pens along with a laptop/computer with decent audio and reasonable internet will be required of each attendee.
